‘Extremely cruel and tragic’: Iranian director Asghar Farhadi speaks out against state violence and the war as reflected on by Dastur Cyrus Jamshidi
The esteemed Iranian film director Asghar Farhadi bravely speaks out against state violence and war. His words resonate deeply within our Zoroastrian community at the Asho Farohar Center. We recognize the profound courage required to voice truth in the face of oppression. Farhadi condemns violence, shining a light on the tragic loss of innocent lives. This act of moral clarity upholds the very essence of Asha, our cosmic truth and order.
Truth, Violence, and Asha’s Path
Our faith teaches us that Ahura Mazda, the Wise Lord, created a world governed by Asha, righteousness and order. Consequently, any act of state violence or warfare directly contradicts this divine principle. The suffering of civilians, as highlighted by Farhadi, offends the sanctity of life itself. We believe every soul deserves dignity and protection. Furthermore, the pollution of conflict, both physical and spiritual, corrupts the purity of our shared air and water, a sacred trust from creation. We must actively resist such destructive forces.
Zoroastrians champion honesty in all dealings, whether in commerce or governance. Deception and brutality sow the seeds of Angra Mainyu, the destructive spirit. Conversely, speaking truth, even at great personal cost, strengthens Spenta Mainyu, the benevolent spirit. Therefore, Farhadi’s condemnation serves as a powerful testament to the enduring human spirit’s yearning for justice. His stand reminds us of our collective duty to protect the innocent and uphold ethical conduct.
Upholding Righteousness in Action
As guardians of the ancient tradition, we continuously advocate for ecological stewardship and peaceful coexistence. The bombing campaigns and suppression of protesters described by Farhadi represent a grave deviation from righteous governance. Leaders must protect their people, not harm them. Ultimately, we envision a world where the triumph of light over falsehood prevails. We encourage all individuals to reflect on their own roles in fostering peace and truth. Each person’s actions contribute either to the advancement of Asha or to its decline. We pray for all those suffering from conflict and injustice, upholding hope for a future guided by compassion.
