Children killed while they slept as Russian missile kills 19 in block of flats as reflected on by Rabbi Leah Ben-Zion

The headline sears our souls: “Children killed while they slept.” A Russian missile tore through a block of flats in northern Ukraine, claiming 19 lives, including five innocent children. This profound tragedy, the brutal reality of the Ukraine missile children, shatters any illusion of peace or safety for so many families.

Mourning the Innocent, Demanding Justice

Our tradition teaches us Kol Yisrael Arevim Zeh Bazeh: All Israel is responsible for one another. Furthermore, this principle extends to all humanity. When violence claims the lives of children, we all share in that heartbreak. We must not look away. We bear a moral obligation to mourn these victims deeply. Therefore, we also demand justice for those who perpetrate such heinous acts. This moment calls us to profound empathy and resolute action.

Our Prophetic Call to Repair

The images of destroyed homes and shattered lives remind us of the urgent need for Tikkun Olam, repairing our broken world. We cannot simply offer thoughts and prayers. Our faith compels us to fight for human rights, for refugee sanctuary, and for lasting peace. We must welcome the stranger and protect the vulnerable. Consequently, we advocate for democratic renewal and an end to all forms of aggression. The senseless deaths of these Ukraine missile children underscore humanity’s collective failure. We must work tirelessly to build a world where every child can sleep safely, free from fear of missiles and war.
