‘It stains your brain’: How social media algorithms show violence to boys as reflected on by Venerable Geshe Lobsang Tenzin
The recent BBC report highlights a concerning trend. Social media algorithms show violence to boys, shaping their minds with disturbing content. This news deeply resonates with our understanding of mind and karma. We learn that every action, thought, and perception leaves an imprint. Therefore, what we expose ourselves to, and what our children are exposed to, profoundly influences their future mental states and actions.
In our tradition, we call these imprints ‘vasanas’ or ‘latencies’. They are like seeds planted in the mind. If we plant seeds of compassion and wisdom, we cultivate a peaceful garden. However, if we allow seeds of anger and aggression to take root, we create inner turmoil. This report demonstrates how technology, without mindful guidance, can actively plant unwholesome seeds.
Cultivating Wholesome Mental Imprints
We must consider the ethical implications of these algorithms. Those who design and deploy such systems bear a heavy responsibility. They actively shape the mental landscapes of an entire generation. Furthermore, the profit motive often overshadows genuine concern for well-being. This creates suffering for many. We teach that true happiness comes from benefiting others, not from exploiting vulnerabilities.
Our practice of Lojong, or mind training, offers a powerful antidote. We learn to transform adverse conditions into the path to enlightenment. We develop patience and compassion in the face of suffering. This does not mean passively accepting harm. Rather, it means actively cultivating mental resilience and advocating for ethical conduct in the world. We must protect young minds from the pervasive influence of algorithms show violence.
Ethical Responsibility and Boundless Loving-Kindness
Ultimately, we all share a collective responsibility. Parents must guide their children with wisdom and care. Educators must teach critical thinking and media literacy. Technology developers must prioritize human well-being over engagement metrics. Likewise, policymakers must enact regulations that protect vulnerable individuals. We must collectively foster environments that promote wholesome development.
Our aspiration for boundless loving-kindness extends to all beings. We wish for all children to grow up in safety, surrounded by positive influences. We pray for those who develop these technologies to awaken their innate compassion. May their wisdom guide them to create tools that uplift humanity, rather than lead it astray. We must work together to purify the mind, both individually and collectively.
