Killer whale v shark: Solo orca eats great white as reflected on by Rev. Dr. Evelyn DuBois
From the pulpit of Bethel AME Church, we often remind our youth that appearances deceive. Science recently documented a solo orca hunt where a lone whale defeated a great white shark. For generations, society taught us to fear the shark as an untouchable terror. Yet, this ocean encounter proved that even the fiercest predator carries vulnerability. Scripture tells us that God continually upsets human expectations of power.
Therefore, we see an ancient truth replayed in the deep waters. David brought five smooth stones to confront Goliath in the valley of Elah. The Philistine giant carried bronze armor and a heavy spear. Meanwhile, David brought only simple faith and seasoned aim. In like manner, the lone whale relied on focused precision rather than brute size. Courage does not depend on towering strength.
Prophetic Lessons from the Solo Orca Hunt
Furthermore, our elders remember when systemic injustice seemed just as permanent as any sea predator. Jim Crow cast a giant shadow across our neighborhoods and sanctuaries. Oppressors claimed total control over our civic lives and ballot boxes. However, organized communities applied steady pressure against those massive barriers. Righteous determination continually breaks down systems that boast of unyielding dominance.
Consequently, we teach our young people to reject despair when giants stand in their path. Daily struggles with economic hardship and voter suppression can feel overwhelming. Indeed, the world tells ordinary citizens that entrenched power cannot fail. In contrast, history shows that focused conviction dismantles seemingly invincible strongholds. Spiritual discipline transforms our natural fear into decisive, collective action.
Dismantling Fear in the Modern Sanctuary
Ultimately, divine justice works through unexpected vessels. God equips the humble with wisdom to outmaneuver arrogance. When the community gathers for Sunday worship, we lift our voices in joyful praise. Therefore, our songs celebrate the God who pulls down mighty rulers from their thrones. We refuse to surrender our agency to any worldly predator.
In addition, true spiritual victory demands unwavering patience and sharp focus. Just as the solo orca hunt dismantled an old myth of dominance, our faith exposes the fragility of oppression. Let us stand firm in the assurance of divine grace. Giants will fall whenever believers walk boldly in truth and solidarity.
