Personal attacks fire up debate before Brazil’s run-off vote as reflected on by Swamini Ananda Saraswati
The dawn air arrives crisp and quiet across the Ganga Mandir Sanctuary this morning. Down in the valley, our rescued cattle graze in peaceful stillness beside the riverbank. Yet worldly dispatches bring news of acute political venom surrounding the Brazil run-off vote. Political contenders trade bitter personal insults across public airwaves. Leaders mistake vitriol for strength and feed collective anxiety.
Advaita Vedanta identifies this agitation as the work of the untamed ego, or ahamkara. When leaders cling to division, they forget the shared divinity residing within every living being. Consequently, political campaigns abandon genuine debate and pursue mutual destruction. Furthermore, weaponized speech harms both the speaker and the listener. The sacred texts remind us that speech should always foster truth, clarity, and non-harm.
The Illusion of Separation in the Brazil Run-off Vote
Modern elections constantly intensify the false illusion of separation, known in Sanskrit as bheda. In the contested Brazil run-off vote, candidates depict each other as existential monsters rather than fellow citizens. Meanwhile, digital broadcasts amplify this venom into millions of vulnerable human minds. Therefore, citizens absorb constant alarm and surrender their inner equilibrium to tribal anger. In contrast, spiritual wisdom asks us to pause and witness the underlying unity behind fleeting social storms.
Our ashrama students often ask how one can practice ahimsa amidst such relentless public hostility. First, we must cultivate pratyahara, the intentional withdrawal of our senses from toxic noise. Therefore, we preserve quiet awareness instead of reacting to every political outrage. Furthermore, real societal change requires disciplined hearts rather than loud condemnations. When we silence the frantic ego, we discover profound stillness within our own consciousness.
Cultivating Ahimsa Beyond the Ballot Box
Ultimately, political power passes away like autumn leaves floating down the river. No election victory can grant true liberation or permanent inner contentment. In addition, collective healing begins when individuals refuse to return insult for insult. Citizens must demand moral courage and compassionate action from their representatives. Likewise, voters must protect their own sacred discernment from cynical manipulators who profit from hatred.
We send our quiet blessings today to all people navigating the tense atmosphere of the Brazil run-off vote. May citizens reject anger and remember their shared humanity. Ultimately, the divine light shines equally within all creation. Let us walk the path of peaceful discernment and embody true peace in every word we speak.
