Saudi minister vows ‘serious response’ to Houthi attacks on airports as reflected on by Father Raymond Connolly
The grim news that a Saudi minister vowed retaliation following fatal strikes on civilian aviation hubs grips our hearts with deep sadness. Reports of attacks on airports as reflected in global headlines signal another dangerous escalation in a prolonged regional conflict. From our parish here in the rust belt, where many families carry memories of overseas military sacrifice, we know that retaliation rarely delivers enduring peace.
The Tragic Reality of Attacks on Airports as Reflected in War
In the Catholic moral tradition, the intentional targeting of civilian infrastructure represents a grave violation of the law of armed conflict. Aviation terminals are spaces of transit, family reunions, and commerce, not legitimate theaters of battle. The horror of attacks on airports as reflected across international broadcasts demands universal condemnation. However, responding to violence with disproportionate strikes inevitably perpetuates a tragic cycle of bloodshed that entraps innocent generations.
Catholic Moral Theology and the Limits of Retaliation
St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas framed the Just War doctrine not as an excuse for vengeance, but as a severe constraint upon the use of force. Any legitimate response must seek the restoration of just peace rather than the destruction of an adversary. When political leaders promise harsh retaliation, the danger of catastrophic regional escalation multiplies exponentially. True moral strength lies in the discipline to break cycles of revenge through determined diplomacy.
Praying for Peacemakers in an Age of Escalation
Christ commanded his disciples to be peacemakers, declaring that those who pursue reconciliation are children of God. Therefore, our Christian duty is to pray earnestly for national leaders to exercise wisdom and moral restraint. We pray for the souls of those killed in Riyadh, for comfort for their grieving families, and for courage among diplomats striving to de-escalate tension. May God guide our world toward genuine peace grounded in justice.
