Anti-sex trafficking advocate accuses GOP Sen. Katie Britt of distorting her story as reflected on by Father Raymond Connolly
In our valley, workers know when someone tells an honest story. They also know when someone bends the truth. Recently, an advocate against sex trafficking accused a prominent politician of distorting human suffering for partisan gain. As a pastor in an old mill town, I watch national spectacles with sorrow. People often treat agonizing trauma like cheap political currency. However, our Catholic faith demands deep reverence for every wounded soul.
Every week, troubled neighbors sit in the confessionals of St. Jude Parish. They carry heavy burdens from broken homes, lost jobs, and bitter betrayals. They offer these stories in sacred trust before God. Therefore, nobody may ever exploit their tears for personal leverage. When leaders reduce a survivor’s agony to a scripted talking point, they commit a grave moral offense against human dignity.
The Moral Cost of Distorting Human Suffering
Catholic social teaching affirms that the human person remains the foundation of all society. Consequently, politicians must never use vulnerable people as mere instruments for power. When someone alters a victim’s testimony, they strip away that person’s agency. Furthermore, they weaponize real grief to score rhetorical points on television. Such tactics wound the soul of our civic life.
Scripture clearly commands honest speech and just witness. In the Book of Proverbs, the Lord condemns the lying tongue that sows discord. Meanwhile, Christ always approached broken sinners with gentle honesty. He never manipulated the bleeding woman or the blind beggar to advance a political career. Instead, our Lord listened to their cries with absolute integrity.
Reclaiming Truth and Sacred Solidarity
Our industrial towns understand the ache of forgotten people. Deindustrialization left deep scars across this river valley, yet our families preserve their quiet honor. Likewise, survivors of terrible violence deserve fierce protection rather than partisan distortion. When public officials practice distorting human suffering, they silence the very voices they claim to defend. True justice requires humble listening before any political action.
Ultimately, we must demand higher standards from our public leaders. Words carry moral weight because they shape how we treat our neighbors. Therefore, let us reject cynical theater and defend genuine solidarity with the afflicted. We pray that our nation chooses honesty over ambition, honoring every wounded child of God with sacred truth.
