Hong Kong prepares tough new national security punishments as reflected on by Rabbi Leah Ben-Zion
The Deepening Shadow of Repression
Authorities in Hong Kong are preparing tough new national security punishments to suppress political dissent. These severe measures mandate lengthy prison sentences for treason and expand definitions of sedition. At Temple Beth Shalom, our community watches these developments with heavy hearts. Jewish tradition teaches us that law must protect human dignity rather than silence lawful conscience. Therefore, we recognize an urgent moral crisis when state power crushes civic voice.
Our prophetic heritage consistently demands that leaders practice righteousness and defend vulnerable voices. The prophet Isaiah condemned magistrates who codified oppressive statutes to deny justice to the needy. Consequently, we must speak whenever regimes weaponize judicial systems against their own citizens. True civic peace does not arise from forced silence. Instead, genuine stability grows through open debate, transparent governance, and mutual respect.
Confronting Harsh National Security Punishments
These escalating national security punishments erode the foundational liberties that sustain any healthy society. Dictators throughout history have labeled calls for freedom as treason. Meanwhile, ordinary citizens face devastating consequences simply for gathering peacefully or questioning state policy. Our coastal congregation maintains deep ties across the Pacific basin. Furthermore, many of our congregants cherish family roots and cultural memories in Hong Kong.
Jewish ethics emphasize the divine spark within every individual soul. When a government criminalizes peaceful dissent, it assaults that sacred human freedom. In addition, such policies violate the covenantal trust between rulers and the governed. Jewish legal traditions affirm the rule of law through the ancient principle of dina de-malkhuta dina. However, that acceptance ends when civil statutes enforce systematic cruelty and injustice.
Pursuing Justice Across Borders
Our commitment to repairing the world, or Tikkun Olam, transcends national borders. Injustice anywhere threatens moral integrity everywhere. Therefore, progressive communities of faith must stand alongside democratic activists and journalists under threat. We demand that international bodies hold authoritarian authorities accountable. Moreover, we must welcome refugees who flee political persecution and offer them genuine sanctuary.
Ultimately, fear cannot extinguish the human longing for liberty. Despots impose severe penalties because free expression frightens brittle regimes. We hold the people of Hong Kong in our daily prayers. In response, our congregation will continue our steadfast advocacy for civil rights and moral courage. We build an enduring future only when justice flows like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.
