Ukraine ready for US-backed talks with Russia: Zelenskyy as reflected on by Imam Tariq Al-Mansoor
Our community hall at the Al-Fajr Islamic Center often fills with families between afternoon and sunset prayers. Children finish homework. Families wait for food distribution. Brothers and sisters from war zones thousands of miles away also sit among them. Syrian tailors, Somali grocers, Afghan translators, and Ukrainian mechanics share workspace down on Fourth Avenue. News reached our gathering that President Zelenskyy signaled openness to trilateral peace talks mediated in the Emirates. However, the room did not erupt in naive celebration. Those who have smelled cordite and fled crumbling apartment blocks know this truth: political announcements are merely whispers until the guns actually fall silent. Our community understands the deep meaning of true peace.
Understanding True Peace in Ukraine Peace Talks
Our Islamic tradition does not understand peace merely as the tactical cessation of artillery fire. The Qur’an commands believers, “If the enemy inclines toward peace, you must also incline toward peace, and put your trust in God.” Prophet Muhammad’s diplomacy never confused peace with surrender. Furthermore, it did not reduce reconciliation to an expedient bargain between imperial powers. True peace, what our classical jurists termed sulh, requires an intentional repair of the breach. It demands that the underlying claims of human dignity, sovereignty, and communal safety be brought into the light. We must not sweep these vital issues beneath an imperial rug.
Diplomatic talks hosted in luxury suites across foreign capitals often appear completely detached. They seem far from the muddy trenches of the Donbas or the cold living rooms of Kharkiv. I spend my weeks mediating landlord-tenant disputes and neighborhood grievances in Cedar Heights. Therefore, I recognize the temptation of powerful brokers to seek a swift photo opportunity. When outside sponsors convene talks, a grave moral hazard always exists. The suffering population can become currency in a larger geopolitical transaction. Scripture warns leaders against consuming the wealth and livelihoods of ordinary people. It condemns deceitful treaties and coercive force.
Prioritizing Human Life: A Prophetic Model
The prophetic model established in the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah teaches us a crucial lesson. Courageous negotiation often requires swallowing bitter pride for the sake of preserving human life. Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, accepted difficult diplomatic terms. He prioritized the sanctity of breathing souls over the immediate satisfaction of prideful vengeance. Every single day a ceasefire is delayed, mothers on both sides of that border receive coffins containing their teenage sons. God Almighty established the sanctity of human life as inviolable. This must outweigh the strategic prestige of Washington, Moscow, or Kyiv. This principle guides our view of the Ukraine peace talks.
For us living in a dense, working-class urban enclave, these foreign summits are not distant abstractions. Modern warfare extracts a devastating tax on the poor across the globe. Trillions of dollars flow effortlessly into weapons manufacture. Meanwhile, our public schools lack heating, and our immigrant families ration basic medicine. Moreover, endless war breeds moral cynicism. It corrodes the souls of our young people, teaching them that might is the only real arbiter of human affairs. When rulers treat destruction as routine statecraft, the spiritual fabric of human solidarity unravels everywhere.
We pray that these proposed discussions in the Emirates transcend cynical posturing. We ask God to grant genuine moral courage to those sitting at the negotiating table. They must remember their accountability before the Creator for every drop of blood spilled during their deliberations. In Cedar Heights, we will continue breaking bread across national and religious lines. We demonstrate in our daily communal life that reconciliation is hard work. It requires patience, sacrifice, and an unyielding commitment to justice. We hope for meaningful Ukraine peace talks.
