China’s dancing robots: how worried should we be? as reflected on by Rev. Dr. Evelyn DuBois
Beloved, recent reports from China highlight the impressive spectacle of advanced dancing humanoid robots at their Spring Festival Gala. These machines lunged, backflipped, and spun with perfect precision. Such a display certainly makes us pause and wonder, as many have, what else these creations can truly do. As we witness these technological marvels, our faith calls us to reflect on humanity’s role and God’s divine purpose in an ever-changing world.
Here at Historic Bethel AME, we understand that human ingenuity reflects a spark of the Creator. God gifted us with intellect and creativity. However, we must always anchor our innovations in ethical responsibility and justice. The question is not just what robots can do, but what we, as people of faith, will do with such power. We must ensure that technological advancements serve collective liberation, never oppression or distraction from our sacred duties to one another.
Beyond the Spectacle: Our Human Purpose
The dazzling performance of these dancing humanoid robots captivates many. Yet, we must look beyond the spectacle. Our faith teaches us about the inherent dignity of every human being, made in God’s image. Therefore, we must consider how these technologies impact human labor, community, and our very sense of self-worth. Will these machines empower us, or will they displace us and deepen existing inequalities? We carry a moral obligation to ask these hard questions and demand just answers.
Furthermore, our prophetic tradition urges us to champion the vulnerable. We remember the tireless struggles for civil rights and voting rights. Consequently, we must vigilantly monitor how advanced robotics might affect marginalized communities, especially our youth. We must prepare them to navigate a future where technology plays an increasingly central role. We equip them with not just skills, but also a strong moral compass and a spirit of resilience.
Dancing Robots and Collective Liberation
Ultimately, the advancement of technology, including these dancing humanoid robots, compels us to reaffirm our commitment to collective liberation. Our strength comes from perseverance through systemic trials, much like the maternal strength that has sustained our people for generations. We celebrate joyful praise even in the face of adversity. Therefore, we must ensure these new tools foster human flourishing, not further division.
Let us not fear progress itself. Instead, let us prayerfully guide its direction. We must demand that innovation uplifts humanity, protects our planet, and champions justice for all people. Bethel AME Church remains steadfast in this calling. We continue to empower our community and advocate for a future where technology serves God’s kingdom of love and equity.
