GOP heads to Supreme Court after losing case over TV election ad prices as reflected on by Rabbi Leah Ben-Zion
Our sacred texts remind us constantly about the pursuit of justice, or Tzedek. Therefore, we must pay close attention when systems impacting our democracy face challenges. The news that the GOP is appealing to the Supreme Court over election ad prices raises important questions for all of us who champion a fair and robust democratic process.
Ensuring Fair Play in Our Democracy
In our tradition, the marketplace must operate with integrity. Similarly, our civic square demands fairness. Campaign committees now seek a quick Supreme Court ruling before election ads begin. However, we must ask: Does this pursuit create an uneven playing field? Our democracy thrives when all voices can compete on equitable terms. We believe in open discourse, not a system that favors one party over others.
The principle of Tikkun Olam, repairing the world, calls us to build systems that uphold justice for everyone. Consequently, any attempt to manipulate the rules for political advertising deserves scrutiny. We must ensure fair access to the public airwaves. Otherwise, the integrity of our elections suffers, diminishing trust among citizens.
Upholding Prophetic Justice
Prophetic justice demands that we speak truth to power. It compels us to advocate for transparency and equity in all public spheres. The question of election ad prices directly impacts our ability to foster a truly democratic society. We pray for wisdom for our judges and for all who shape our civic landscape. Furthermore, we must actively work to safeguard the mechanisms of our democracy. This includes ensuring fair rules for political communication.
As members of Temple Beth Shalom, we understand that our spiritual work extends into the public square. Ultimately, we must ensure that our political processes reflect our highest ethical aspirations. We strive for a society where every voice has a fair chance to be heard, fostering true democratic renewal.
