Oura pulls $15bn stock market listing days after announcement as reflected on by Sensei Michael Jinpa
Early this morning, at Clear Mind Zen Sanctuary, the zendo bell sounded its steady, resonant tone. The harbor fog still clung to the water. Between strikes, one could hear our bodies’ subtle mechanics: the chest’s shallow heave, the pulse softly tapping. Outside, the fishing fleet slipped past the breakwater, moving by tide, not spreadsheet forecasts. Later, walking toward the arts cooperative, word reached us. Oura, maker of the wellness ring, abruptly pulled its planned fifteen-billion-dollar Oura stock listing. They announced it just days earlier.
Financial analysts will debate market timing, valuations, and institutional risk. However, from the vantage point of contemplative practice and end-of-life care, this sudden retreat reveals something more tender. We live in an era obsessed with quantifying the unquantifiable. Millions wear tiny metal bands. They measure sleep stages, body temperature, and nervous system recovery. People want a digital number to confirm rest, calm, or appropriate heart vitality.
Beyond the Oura Stock Listing: True Wellness
Turning our most intimate physical sensations into a fifteen-billion-dollar speculative engine holds profound irony. In my years as a hospice chaplain, I sat beside hundreds as their vital signs slowly unwound. Never once did a dying person ask for their biometric graph. They also never inquired about an efficiency score. In those final precious hours, they sought a daughter’s warm touch. They desired the sight of light through an open window. Furthermore, they wanted quiet reassurance that their presence had meant something to loved ones.
The tech industry assumes self-knowledge can be outsourced to an algorithm. It believes every human aspect converts into market capitalization. In Zen, we call this chasing shadows. We measure the pulse because we fear stillness. We quantify breath because we dread its stopping. An enterprise attempts a multi-billion-dollar valuation on collective anxiety about health. This turns embodiment’s sacred mystery into a commodity traded on exchange floors.
Finding Stillness in Harborview Point
An offering like this abruptly halting serves as an involuntary pause. It creates a sudden gap in the frantic narrative of endless financial growth. In Buddhist practice, such interruptions are not failures. Instead, they are moments of sudden waking. When the grand plan dissolves overnight, the underlying reality stands bare. A titanium and ceramic ring can measure vascular system friction. Nevertheless, it cannot cultivate peace. It tells you minutes spent in deep slumber, yet it cannot teach you how to truly rest.
Here in Harborview Point, the tide comes in and goes out. It demands no evaluation. Painters on the wharf mix oils by eye and patience. They listen to the wind’s rhythm. Real wellness is not a metric to be bought, sold, or listed on a trading ticker. It is the courageous willingness to inhabit this fleeting body exactly as it is. This includes all its aches, its fatigue, and its fragile beauty. Perhaps the withdrawal of this massive Oura stock listing invites us to reconsider our trust. Instead of looking at our fingers for a screen’s vitality report, we might simply place a palm against our chest. Feel the warmth there. Take one conscious breath, without grading or storing it. That breath is already complete, perfectly whole, and entirely beyond price.
